This Day in Studio History

It was on this date in 1996 that Metal XOR-B Studio was taken down. After nine months of use it was time to move the Studio once again. It was moved back to a prior location, the same place where Circle IX Studio had existed a couple of years earlier.

For more information on Metal XOR-B, click here to read the Studio Chapter feature that gives a detailed account of that Studio.

This Day in Studio History

On Wednesday, July 6, 1994, I found out we had a wireless microphone beltpack at work that was ordered by mistake and could not be used. I asked about it and was told I could buy it.

The next day, which was fourteen years ago today, I bought the unit for $25. I brought it home and attached it to the back of my electric guitar and used it as a wireless unit for my guitar. In theory it worked great, but since I was doing most of my guitar playing sitting down in the Studio, I took the unit off and put it in storage for future use.

This Day in Studio History

It was on this day in 1998 that the Studio first used the audio editing software Cool Edit. With this program the songs could now be mixed down from the 4-track master into the computer and be edited with effects, cleaned up, or re-arranged. Once the songs were finished in Cool Edit they were put in a play list and the cassette copies of an album were made from that list.

Prior to this software, once a song was recorded on the 4-track master it was finished, it just needed mixed down. But now songs, or parts of the songs, could be changed after they were recorded. This new process was first used for the Isthmus album Parabolic Dish Festival Volume 1 which was released in July of 1998.

It was on this day in 1996 that the Mune Mud album Monograph was recorded.

Mune Mud - Monograph

This is the only "live" solo album recorded to date. It was "live" because Jason sung all the songs live to the pre-recorded music in one take. The music was from the original 4-track master tapes, so the only thing new were the vocals. Most of the songs came from the 1991 album Olympus and many others were preview songs for the upcoming Equation of Time album.

Hopefully this won't be the last "live" solo album.

This Day in Studio History

It was this day in 1994 that Jason went to work and talked to his co-worker, Kevin, about the new music he had been recording. Kevin asked what the new music was like. Jason said it was a combination of the heavy, industrial music of NueroMorgue and the lighter, more melodic music of Mune Mud. So Kevin's suggestion for a project name was NueroMud, a combination of the other two projects. Jason liked the suggestion, so this was the day that NueroMud was named.

On October 18 of that same year, the first of two NueroMud albums, ...Libra 971, was released.

This Day in Studio History

It was on this day in 1993 that the Studio purchased the Korg DW-8000 synthesizer from Jason's cousin, Harry. Harry was upgrading and needed to sell the synth. And Jason was ready to upgrade from the portable keyboards the Studio had been using for years, so the sale benefited both of them.

It was used in bands such as Pheonix, The Two-Tones, The Traveling Deengelburys, Mune Mud, and more.

The Korg is still a 'key' part in the Studio today. It acts as a MIDI trigger connected to the computer which has all the sounds the songs use today.

This Day in Studio History

It was Sunday, February 5, 1995, that Isthmus had their first official jam session.

Isthmus - Electric Field Donut

The first Metal XOR Studio was still under construction in the basement of the house Jason was renting when they had the jam session. It consisted of Jason on electric guitar and vocals and Harry on keyboards, bass guitar, and vocals.

From that day's recordings came the album Electric Field Donut in 1996 and the EP album Ideas in 1997.
